Ask WÜSTHOF is a question and answer series where we respond to the great inquiries we often get from our valued customers.
Great knives are an investment and, like all investments, they need to be properly managed. Before you even get to the point where you need to take your knives to be professionally sharpened, there are several steps you can take to make sure that your WÜSTHOF is always kept in prime condition.
Practice Daily Knife Care
Knife care should be on your mind every time you remove one of your knives from your knife block. Taking proper care with every use will make sure that sharp edge is maintained for the maximum amount of time.
WÜSTHOF has a wide variety of home sharpening and honing tools that are made specifically to ensure ease of use and great results. If your knife blade has lost some of its sharpness, and you just need to realign the blade, a honing steel will refresh your knife's edge. The graphic above shows the simple technique you should use when honing.
If your knife seems to be a little more blunt than the first day you brought it home, one of our ceramic knife sharpeners will help bring your WÜSTHOF back to its former glory.
If your WÜSTHOF knife absolutely requires professional sharpening, look for an authorized WÜSTHOF retailer in your area. There are also several quality travelling operators that resell and service WÜSTHOF products. You can find a directory of them on our website.
WARNING: Be weary of travelling sharpening services that are not directly affiliated with us.
If Your Knife Has Been Botched ...
WÜSTHOF will always try to find a service for you to try and salvage the knife. However, in the unfortunate case that a knife cannot be fixed, the service responsible for ruining the knife should replace it for you, free of charge. Any of our authorized retailers will do just that.
Also, WÜSTHOF does offer a replacement purchase option. Send us your damaged knife to be recycled and, in return, you have the option to buy a replacement at 50% off the current retail value plus taxes and shipping.
